What mental maths classes teach
Mental maths is the ability to hold and manipulate numbers in your head without reaching for paper — estimating whether an answer is plausible, breaking a hard multiplication into two easy ones, spotting that a fraction simplifies before doing the work. It is built on number sense rather than tricks: knowing how numbers relate to each other well enough to choose the easiest route. That skill sits underneath every topic in school maths, which is why weakness here shows up as being slow at everything.
Mental maths and abacus are not the same thing
Abacus training teaches bead positions on a physical frame, which the child later visualises. It works, but it depends on maintaining that visualisation, and the skill often fades once practice stops. Mental maths here is taught without any apparatus — strategies applied directly to numbers, so nothing has to be carried, imagined, or kept warm with daily drills. It also transfers more naturally into school work, because the numbers are the same numbers.
Why calculation speed changes how children feel about maths
A child who is slow at arithmetic experiences every maths lesson as falling behind, and quickly concludes they are bad at the subject. Usually they are not — they are bad at one mechanical layer of it, and that layer is very trainable. When calculation stops taking effort, attention frees up for the actual reasoning, and confidence tends to follow within weeks. Parents often report the change in attitude before the change in marks.
How the sessions run
Two live classes a week, worked interactively rather than lectured. Each session introduces a strategy, applies it to problems from your child's own syllabus level, then drills it under gentle time pressure so it becomes automatic rather than remembered. Concentration and memory exercises are built into the sessions rather than treated as a separate activity.

Mental Mathematics — Common Questions
What's the difference between mental maths and Vedic maths?+
Considerable overlap, different emphasis. Vedic maths is a specific set of sutra-based shortcuts for arithmetic and algebra. Mental maths is broader and more foundational — number sense, estimation, visualisation and concentration, with strategies rather than a fixed system. Younger or less confident students usually start here; students who already calculate reasonably well often get more from Vedic maths.
Do we need an abacus or any materials?+
No. Nothing beyond a notebook, a pencil and a device with a camera. The whole point is that the technique works without apparatus, so there is nothing your child depends on having with them.
What ages is it suitable for?+
Classes 1 to 8. Younger children spend more time on number sense and visualisation; older students move faster into multi-digit strategies and applications like percentages and ratios.
What do the classes cost?+
The trial class is free — 60 minutes live, no payment and no card details. Fees are discussed after it, once Nupur has assessed your child's current level and knows what the programme actually needs to cover.
Will this help with school maths or is it separate?+
It feeds directly into school maths. Practice problems are pitched at your child's syllabus level, so the speed gained shows up in class tests rather than only in drills. Children who need the school syllabus itself taught are usually better served by the maths tuition course.
